The US has been experiencing a rapid shift in the way births take place. It used to be that the standard “normal” birth involved labor and then passing the baby through a woman’s birth canal. These days though, it’s almost as common that a Caesarean birth is the experience you hear an ex-pregnant woman describe. Remember that no birth, whatever method it may be, is any better or worse than another birth, but if you’ve decided to go the traditional route, here are some things to consider.
When you describe a “traditional” birth, what do you think it means? It is important to define it as you feel comfortable, because if you want to get technical, even having a doctor present or performing the birth in a hospital eliminates the “natural” aspect since something more than nothing is included. Make sure you’ve thoroughly planned your birth to be to your liking and be aware of what options you have available to you.
Before actually going through with the birth, take some steps toward learning critical birthing skills. As strange as it may sound, just because birth is a natural occurrence, woman don’t instinctively know how to give birth just as people don’t instinctively know how to walk or talk. Learning how to breathe and how to position your body to work with your baby’s efforts to be born will make the entire process go far smoother.
Relaxing is also something you’ll need to learn. Once more contrary to what you’d assume, a woman will find the best results when she is relaxing herself and her body in order to allow the baby to work its way out of her body easier. A tight, firm body will only make this journey more difficult, so learn how and when to loosen your body during the delivery.
Finally, attitude is critical. A positive attitude will make all the difference. If you’re thinking negative thoughts, it will be more difficult to relax and adapt to the situation. Keeping a calm, peaceful, open mind allows you to ease into the next stage of your life, parenthood, much easier than if you’re fighting the whole way. This baby will come out one way or another, so you might as well make the best of it.
