Birth Professional Blog
Birth Professionals: Please encourage all your pregnant clients to self-learn birth and birth-coaching skills. Give them a hand-out of the skills-based methods known in your local area. From 24 weeks onward, just jot down in each pregnant woman’s notes which skill she learned between appointments. Then praise and encourge birthing women to use their skills as she works through the activity of birthing her baby. Skilled birthing families are a pleasure to work with no matter the birth circumstances. You are part of a great societal change … to see a skilled birthing population for all births without exception.
Obstetricians: An Obstetrician is a maternity health care provider. They use their medical skills to assess, monitor and do necessary procedures (AMPs) whether you like them, want them or perhaps even need them. We can love or hate them. You are DOING the activity of birthing your baby alongside all those AMPs (or ‘interventions’). Birthing Better skills were developed by families to use in all births even the most medical.
Midwives: As a midwife you either work in shift or you have your own clients. If you have your own clients and have a ‘partnership’, encourage, insist, require and inspire all your clients to become skilled to birth their baby. Making choices is not enough. Being skilled is what gives strength to your partnership. If you do shift work, encourage your Birth Center/Hospital to encourage all clients to become skilled.
Doulas: You have a special relationship to your clients. Encourage them to self-learn birth and birth-coaching skills, give them a list of skills-based methods, have them teach you what skills they are learning, work together using those skills as birth unfolds no matter where, who is present or type of birth. You can grow a self-learning skilled birthing population for all births without exception.
Extras: Birth skills work well in all births from home alone to elective C-sections. No country yet has a societal expectation that expectant moms and dads self-learn and use birth and birth-coaching skills. This can change and the goal that our Trust has put forward for 50 years! Babies do not come to plan. Birth Plans are veriable. Birth skills can always be used. All families should be skilled to birth their baby.
